Automobile Engineering 3.6 STARTING SYSTEM The starting system of an automobile is used to start the internal combustion engine. Both SI and CI engines cannot start by itself. These engines need to be cranked by a starting motor. This motor is also called a starter or cranking motor. Cranking of any engine means rotating its crank shaft. The engine is the power plant of a vehicle. Automotive engines have gone through tremendous changes since the automobile was first introduced in the 1880s, but all combustion engines still have three requirements that must be met to do their job of providing power - air, fuel, and ignition. DIESEL ENGINES One of the most common prime movers is the diesel engine. Before gaining an understanding of how the engine operates a basic understanding of the engine's components must be gained. This chapter reviews the major components of a generic diesel engine. EO 1.1 DEFINE the following diesel engine terms: a. Compression ratio b. 7 Engine Construction V The cylinders arranged in two banks connected to the same crankshaft. Different angles are used between the cylinder banks. V engines offer the car to have more cylinders with a shorter bonnet length, giving better road visibility. V engines are well balanced, smooth and quiet in operation. 7.8.2 Cylinder Head Engineering 7.8.2.1 Laying out the Rough Dimensions 7.8.2.2 Combustion Chamber and Port Design 7.8.2.3 Valve Train Design 7.8.2.4 Cooling Concepts 7.8.2.5 Lubricating Oil Management 7.8.2.6 Engineering Design Details 7.8.2.7 Engineering in Construction Steps 7.8.2.8 Using CAD in Engineering 7.8.2.9 Computer-Assisted Design THE ENGINE The engine in an automobile provides all the power for moving the automobile, for the hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and for the electrical system. A variety of engine types have been produced, but one class of engine is used most: the internal combustion, piston-type, 4-stroke/cycle, gasoline- 1AUTOMOTIVE FUNDAMENTALS Internal Combustion Engines -MAK 4070E Principles of Engine Operation Prof.Dr. Cem Soruşbay Istanbul Technical University Daimler/Maybach (1882) Incorporated IC engine in automobile Introduction V C clearence volume V D displacement volume V T total volume D bore L stroke TDC top dead center BDC bottom dead center. 7 Introduction Objective Automobile Engineering By P. In general, internal combustion engine with petrol or diesel fuel is used to run a vehicle. An engine may be either a two-stroke engine or a four-stroke engine. An engine consists of a cylinder, piston, valves, valve operating mechanism, Low engine heigl
