Abstract. This review summarizes experimental evidence indicating that purinergic mechanisms are causally involved in acupuncture (AP)-induced analgesia. Electroacupuncture (EAP) and manual AP release at pain-relevant acupoints ATP which may activate purinergic P2X receptors (Rs) especially of the P2X3 type situated at local sensory nerve relates to whether acupuncture's ef fect is due to the precise selection of points to be treated (often termed verum acupuncture), or, alternatively, whether the effects are non-specific and have limited, if any, relationship with precise selection of points (pla-cebo, or sham acupuncture)5. Concepts as to the mode of action of acupuncture analgesia range from an attitudinal change towards sensory input to the release of a neurohumoral analgesic substances.
